Abstract Abstract: Governments around the world are releasing data in increasing amounts in an effort to increase transparency and to create an innovation environment. In this talk, we review some of the efforts and show why this data can be important to citizens around the world. We look at how the maturing Semantic Web technology of linked-data helps to empower the use of open government data and some of the powerful reasons why this approach is successful. We also present some of the promises and challenges facing this technology, and the future of open government systems. Bio James Hendler is the Tetherless World Professor of Computer and Cognitive Science, and the Assistant Dean for Information Technology and Web Science, at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is also a faculty affiliate of the Experimental Multimedia Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), serves as a Director of the UK’s charitable Web Science Trust and is a visiting Professor at the Institute of Creative Technology at DeMontfort University in Leicester, UK. Hendler is a Fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence, the British Computer Society and the IEEE. He is the Editor-in-Chief emeritus of IEEE Intelligent Systems and is the first computer scientist to serve on the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science. In 2010, Hendler was selected as an “Internet Web Expert” by the US government.
